Wall construction along border with Russia may be used for budget write-off — Tymoshenko

On September 3, Ukraine’s Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk announced Ukraine was beginning engineering works at the border with Russia

KIEV, October 13. /TASS/. Engineering works along the border between Ukraine and Russia, called the Wall, are not effective and may be used for budget write-off, leader of the Batkivshchyna Party Yulia Tymoshenko said.

On September 3, Ukraine’s Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk announced Ukraine was beginning engineering works at the border with Russia, which is 2,300km long. Under the Wall project, Ukraine will make a ditch four meters wide and two meters deep along the border line. Kiev would install distanced control systems along the sea border. The total cost of the project is €66 million.

“In a lack of clear, effective actions, they are inventing projects which have not proved positive in the global history. The experience of China’s Great Wall, the Maginot Line, or the Mannerheim Line - none of these have proved effective against military aggressions, they were either destroyed or bypassed,” Tymoshenko told the Inter television channel.

“I hope at least after the elections, the high-profile projects of the kind would be over. I fear, after the elections the Wall will be playing a role not of a PR project, but that of writing-off the budget,” she said.
