ROME, October 8. /TASS/. Parliamentarians of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) rejected the proposal to give the EU the status of a dialogue partner with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Russia’s MP said on Wednesday.
“European parliamentarians tried to include a clause on giving the EU the status of ASEAN dialogue partner. However, Singapore and then other states of the region came against this clause,” the Russian Federation Council (upper house) Foreign Affairs Committee deputy chairman Andrey Klimov said.
He is head of the Russian delegation at the 8th Asia-Europe Parliamentary Partnership Meeting (ASEP).
European colleagues insisted the status be given due to the fact that Russia and the United States had the observer status in ASEAN. “Unlike the EU, both Russia and the US are the states, and the EU is the union of states, and both countries are members of Asia-Pacific Partnership,” Klimov said.
The conference, which involved parliamentarians from more than 40 countries, was devoted to the financial and economic situation in the world due to present-day challenges, as well as to sustainable development in the context of food security.
