Canadian defense ministry says Russian plane flies over its warship in Black Sea

The Canadian warship Toronto, along with the Spanish frigate Almirante Juan de Borbon, entered the Black Sea to participate in the Sea Breath 2014 exercises with Ukraine

OTTAWA, September 09. /ITAR-TASS/. The Canadian Defense Ministry said that a Russian air force plane flew over a Canadian warship in the Black Sea last Sunday, September 7.

The Russian plane flew around the Toronto frigate of Canada’s Royal Navy, not threatening its safety, the Defense Ministry said in a statement on Monday, citing Minister Robert Nicholson as saying.

Such actions are provocative and could lead to escalation to tension. Together with the allies, the Canadian Defense Ministry urges Russia to stop such actions, the statement said.

The Defense Ministry did not say what kind of plane flew over the ship. The Canadian warship was participating in the naval exercises in the sea.

The Canadian and Spanish frigates Toronto and Almirante Juan de Borbon came there to participate in the Sea Breath 2014 exercises with Ukraine. Two NATO warships - the US destroyer Ross and the French corvette Commandant Birot arrived in the sea on September 3.

During the exercises, foreign ships are not planned to call at Ukrainian ports.
