Militia fighters seize control of major highway in eastern Ukraine

DONETSK, September 02. /ITAR-TASS/. Militia fighters of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic on Tuesday seized control of a major highway connecting the cities of Donetsk and Mariupol, republic’s headquarters reported.

“Control of that road is very important, as situated along it are the towns of Dokuchayevsk and Novotroitskoye from where Ukrainian law enforcers were shelling Donetsk,” the headquarters said.

The Donetsk-Mariupol highway goes through the settlement of Yelenovka out of which militia fighters earlier pushed Ukrainian troops.

At the moment Tass has no other sources to confirm this report.

Pro-Kiev troops and local militias in the eastern Ukrainian Donetsk and Luhansk regions are involved in fierce clashes as the Ukrainian armed forces are conducting a military operation to regain control over the breakaway regions, which on May 11 proclaimed their independence at local referendums.
