Israel has been delivering missile strikes against Gaza since Tuesday evening, mostly targeting the populated areas of Deir al-Balah and Beit Lahia, as well as districts in Gaza City.
The Israeli army’s bombing of the Zeitoun residential quarter in eastern Gaza has killed a two-year-old girl after a missile hit a food store located near a mosque.
Mousa Abu Marzook, a leader of the Hamas radical Islamist group, said that the wife and a child of Mohammed Deif who heads Hamas’ military wing, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, were among those killed by Israeli strikes.
Palestinian radicals have fired 70 rockets at Israel over the past 18 hours after truce was disrupted in the Gaza Strip, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported on Wednesday.
The Israeli army has retaliated by destroying over 60 targets in the Palestinian enclave, the IDF said.
The Israeli army has sent mobilization orders to 2,000 Israeli reservists, resuming a call-up of citizens who were allowed ten days ago to return home after Israel and Palestinian militants started a series of indirect negotiations on a long-term truce in the Gaza Strip. Consultations were held in the Egyptian capital of Cairo and were disrupted after a rocket attack on the Israeli territory on Tuesday.
Palestinian militants from Hamas’ military wing, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, have shelled an Israeli gas rig in the Mediterranean Sea, the Al Jazeera TV Channel reported on Wednesday. There have been no reports yet on any damage or casualties as a result of the shelling.
This is the first time that Hamas militants have shelled an Israeli sea-based gas extraction and processing facility located off the Gaza Strip.
Militants of the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades earlier targeted only ground facilities on the territory of Israel with rocket and mortar fire.
