Palestine backs call for Mideast Quartet enlargement — chief negotiator

Saeb Erekat is in Moscow to garner support as Palestinian negotiators in Cairo are bidding for a deal with Israel on the future of war-torn Gaza

MOSCOW, August 19. /ITAR-TASS/. Palestine upholds the idea of enlarging the international Quartet on the Middle East, Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat said on Tuesday.

Erekat is in Moscow to garner support as Palestinian negotiators in Cairo are bidding for a deal with Israel on the future of war-torn Gaza.

He believes it’s the Quartet or a broader international conference that could determine the date for withdrawing troops from the territories seized in 1967. “This issue was also discussed at my meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov,” Erekat said.

The Quartet is comprised of Russia, the United States, the United Nations, and the European Union.
