Spanish priest first European lost to Ebola virus

MADRID, August 12. /ITAR-TASS/. Spanish priest Miguel Pajare infected by a strain of the Ebola virus has died in Madrid, hospital officials said on Tuesday.

Pajares, 75, was the first European who contracted the disease in Liberia. He was airlifted to Madrid and was treated with an experimental drug manufactured in the United States.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates, the Ebola death toll has exceeded 1,000 people. Most deaths were reported in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
