EU fails to impose economic sanctions on Russia — source

BRUSSELS, July 01. /ITAR-TASS/. The EU Council on Tuesday failed to adopt a decision on calling the EU summit in order to impose economic sanctions on Russia, a European diplomatic source told ITAR-TASS, commenting on a meeting of the EU Council at the level of ambassadors in Brussels.

“Russia has taken a number of steps to deescalate the situation in the east of Ukraine, in particular, ensuring the release of hostages, including OSCE observers and participating in direct top-level negotiations on the settlement of the situation. In these conditions, the EU countries have decided to postpone the consideration of the issue of sanctions until the next EU Council meeting at the level of permanent representatives that will be held at the beginning of next week,” the diplomat said.
