Crown Prince Felipe to be proclaimed Spain's new King

For the first time in the history of Spain, the coronation of a new monarch will take place without a religious ceremony

MADRID, June 06. /ITAR-TASS/. Crown Prince Felipe will be proclaimed the King of Spain on June 19, leader of the Parliament’s lower house Jesus Posada confirmed.

For the first time in the history of Spain, the coronation of a new monarch will take place without a religious ceremony. The secular ceremony will not be attended by foreign leaders and royalty.

On June 2, King Juan Carlos I of Spain abdicated.

The process of Spain’s Crown Prince Felipe’s accession to the throne has been launched following the King’s abdication. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy noted that in line with the Spanish Constitution, a law must be adopted that will allow Crown Prince Felipe to succeed the throne.

The prime minister stressed that Juan Carlos I considers it to be the most suitable moment for a normal transition of power to the successor. The King has expressed hope that the process will be carried out with respect to the monarch as a symbol of freedom and democracy.
