Several bomb blasts cause casualties in China’s Urumqi — Xinhua

More than 30 people were killed and around 100 were wounded in the Urumqi explosion

BEIJING, May 22. /ITAR-TASS/. Several bomb blasts happened in the western Chinese city of Urumqi, an administrative center of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. More than 30 people were killed and around 100 were wounded in a bomb explosion staged in the Chinese city of Urumqi, Chinese news agency Xinhua reported on Thursday.

The incident occurred at 7:50 a.m. local time (0:50 a.m. BST) on Thursday at an open market near Renmin park. Eyewitnesses said that two cross-country vehicles rammed into a crowd of people. One vehicle exploded and an explosive device was thrown from another one.

Specialists are working at the blast site, the crime scene is cordoned off.

Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region where Uyghur Muslims live along with the titular Chinese nation of Han is considered to be a quite volatile Chinese region. Militants from the Islamic East Turkestan Movement are acting in the region calling for the region’s secession from China. The illegal armed group committed several terrorist acts in the region killing law enforcers and civilians.
