ST. PETERSBURG, May 20. /ITAR-TASS/. Russia has been seeking for holding a Russia-NATO Council meeting on current situation in Ukraine for several weeks, Deputy Foreign Minister Aleksey Meshkov told reporters in the Russian northern capital on Tuesday.

Asked whether he can confirm that the Russia-NATO Council will meet in Belgium’s capital, Brussels, on May 27, Meshkov said, “I can confirm another thing to you that Russia believes that in the situation emerging in Ukraine when violence continues the Russia-NATO Council should be convened urgently and we have been seeking for this meeting already for several weeks.”

“This council should meet as quickly as possible,” the deputy foreign minister said.

Russia initiated an urgent meeting of the Russia-NATO Council due to a sharply deteriorating situation in southeast Ukraine, the press service of the Russian Permanent Mission at NATO said on Monday.

NATO agreed with Russia’s initiative proposing to hold a meeting at the level of ambassadors on May 27, an official of the North Atlantic Alliance press service told ITAR-TASS.
