Unidentified men open fire on Tajikistani consul's car in Afghanistan

Now diplomat is in hospital where he underwent a surgical operation

DUSHANBE, May 17 /ITAR-TASS/. Unidentified people opened fire on a car of Tajikistan's consul in Fayzabad (the capital city of Afghanistan's province Badakhshan) on Friday night. Rustam Makhmudi received several gunshots and was taken to hospital, a spokesman for the Tajikistani Foreign Ministry, Abulfize Atoyev, told Itar-Tass on Saturday.

"Now the diplomat is in hospital of the Afghan province of Kunduz where he underwent a surgical operation," the spokesman said. "Local surgeons say he is in a moderate condition."

Atoyev said that the armed people attacked the consul's car on its route from Fayzabad to Kunduz.

The law enforcement agencies of the two countries are looking into the accident but no armed grouping has taken responsibility for the attack yet.

Tajikistan is represented in Afghanistan with an embassy in Kabul and consulate offices in the cities of Mazari-Sharif, Fayzabad and Kunduz.
