MOSCOW, April 30. /ITAR-TASS/. The self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic has enough capabilities to defend its sovereignty, the co-chair of its government, Denis Pushilin, said at a press conference on Wednesday, April 30.

“We have enough people and weapons to defend our interests,” he said.

Pushilin said that these were captured weapons and armoured vehicles.

On April 7, activists in Donetsk declared the creation of the Donetsk People’s Republic and decided to hold a referendum on May 11 on the future status of the republic.

Ukrainian Armed Forces

Ukrainian Armed Forces are in full combat readiness. According to the parliament-appointed interim president and Verkhovna Rada Speaker Oleksandr Turchynov, it is connected with a threat from Russia.

At a meeting with the chairs of regional state administrations, Turchynov admitted that Kiev authorities do not control the situation in Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

“The authorities do not control the situation in Donetsk and in the region’s territory. I want to say frankly that law enforcement agencies are not able to take control over the situation in Donetsk and Luhansk regions,” he stated.

Several attempts had been made to destabilise Kharkov, Odessa, Kherson, Nikolayev and Zaporozhye regions. Local administrations had been forced to tighten security for the May holidays, Turchynov said.
