BUCHAREST, April 18. /ITAR-TASS/. Moldova’s accession to the European Union depends on the settlement of the conflict over its breakaway region of Transdniestria, Romanian President Traian Basescu has said.

“I tell you honestly and firmly: Moldova’s admission to the EU is excluded without the resolution of Transdniestrian conflict,” Basescu said on Friday.

“Talks may be held on any issues. However, membership in the EU is impossible when Moldova remains locked in a frozen conflict,” he said.

Basescu has called for radically changing the 5+2 format talks that include Moldova, Transdniestria, the OSCE, Russia, Ukraine and observers from the US and the EU.

“Ukraine, the OSCE and Transdniestria should be expelled from the negotiating process,” he said.
