8 people fall victims of landslide in Washington state

Among the injured, there is a 6-month-old baby in critical condition

LOS ANGELES, March 24. /ITAR-TASS/. The number of victims after a landslide that occurred in Washington state reached 8 people, a police representative reported on Sunday.

He said that over 10 people were reported missing. Rescue operation is underway at the site of the incident. Rescuers use helicopters to search for the victims. Meanwhile, the hazard of another landslide persists.

In the area of the landslide that covers almost 2 square kilometers, about 30 houses have been destroyed. The clay sheet in some spots exceeds 10 meters. The road to Darrington is totally blocked. Eight people were brought to hospitals, including a 6-month-old baby in critical condition.

The landslide occurred on Saturday, March 22, due to heavy rainfalls north from Seattle. Media reported that a small fishing village that had been in this place for a century was completely destroyed. The state’s authorities recommended residents of the area of Stillaguamish River to leave their homes.
