Crimea’s Supreme Council renamed State Council

SIMFEROPOL, March 17, /ITAR-TASS/. The Supreme Council of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea has been renamed the State Council of the Republic of Crimea, the republic’s parliament reported Monday.

The decision was made at an extraordinary plenary session of the 100-seat Council. A total of 85 deputies supported the decision.

The Republic of Crimea, where most residents are Russians, on Sunday held a referendum on whether to secede from Ukraine and become part of Russia or stay within Ukraine with broader autonomy. Some 97 percent of voters chose to join Russia. Crimea’s parliament on Monday declared Crimea an independent sovereign state.
