Crimean referendum website comes under cyber attack from US territory

In the meantime the referendum in Crimea is proceeding in a calm atmosphere

SIMFEROPOL, March 16, 14:21 /ITAR-TASS/. The website of Crimea’s plebiscite Referendum 2014 (referendum2014.ru) has come under a massive cyber attack from US territory, the CrimeaInform new agency has said.

“At 01:00 (03:00Moscow time) our site came under a new wave of the latest generation cyber attack. Our security specialists have identified the source - Illinois University, at Urbana Champaign. It is from there that the servers are being scanned before the attack,” the Crimean referendum’s website said.

In the meantime the referendum in Crimea is proceeding in a calm atmosphere. The turnout is high, international observers say.

DDoS (distributed denial of service) attack is an attempt to make a resource unavailable to its intended users. A great number of computers (as a rule, virus-infected) rain the target resource with queries. As a result of the overload the website is jammed.
