Crimea’s Sevastopol mayor tells Russian lawmakers about city situation

SEVASTOPOL, March 09, /ITAR-TASS/. Mayor of the Crimean city of Sevastopol Aleksey Chaly had a meeting with deputies of State Duma lower house of Russian parliament discussing important aspects of socio-economic problems in the city, the press service of the coordination council for life-supporting facilities and defence of the city of Sevastopol told reporters on Saturday.

Lawmaker from the State Duma defence committee Vladimir Bessonov, deputy chairman of the State Duma committee for production industries Pavel Dorokhin and deputy of Murmansk regional legislature Gennady Stepakhno came to Sevastopol.

“Chaly dwelt on the situation in Sevastopol in the last few years, as different production industries, particularly ship repair, have almost ruined in the city and a crisis is observed in science,” the press service reported.

Negotiators noted that Russia is keenly interested in development of the Black Sea Fleet and new ships were already laid down. Meanwhile, there is a shortage of ship repair capacity, therefore, Russia has serious intentions to revive Sevastopol marine plant increasing ship repair capacity sharply there.

The sides agreed that Sevastopol’s potential based on long-standing technical traditions in this sphere would be in demand for sure.

“The State Duma defence committee will raise creation of production and scientific-technical capacities in Sevastopol for domestic defence and industrial sector,” the press service said.
