BERLIN, February 4. /ITAR-TASS/. Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder believes the European Union should “cooperate with Russia in settling the conflict in Ukraine.”

Ukraine’s problems “should be solved in cooperation with Russia and not in confrontation,” German media quote Schroeder’s new book “Clear Words” on Tuesday. Europe “is not entitled to present Ukraine with a dilemma.”

“If we held talks on the association together with Ukraine and Russia, the situation would look completely different,” Schroeder was quoted as saying.

The former chancellor is confident that progress in conflict resolution could be made only in the event of “positive European-Russian relations.”
