US is preparing sanctions against Ukrainian government and opposition

Earlier some American lawmakers said Congress could impose sanctions against the Ukrainian government for a violent crackdown on demonstrators in Kiev

WASHINGTON, January 30. /ITAR-TASS/. The Obama administration is preparing sanctions against Ukrainian officials and opposition leaders that carry the responsibility for the escalation of violence in the country, Congressional aides said after consultations with the administration. The details of the sanction package have not yet been fully worked out. However, Reuters reports, the package can be put in place quickly in case of “widespread violence.”

Earlier some American lawmakers, including Republican John McCain and Democrat Chris Murphy, said Congress could impose sanctions against the Ukrainian government for a violent crackdown on demonstrators in Kiev.

The same warning was included in the resolution on Ukraine passed on Wednesday by the House Foreign Affairs Committee. At the same time, authors of the document called upon the Ukrainian government, all political parties and protesters to “refrain from violence and avoid confrontation.”
