Lavrov: statements that Syria uses Islamic State of Iraq and Levant are unscrupulous

BRUSSELS, January 29, 1:00 /ITAR-TASS/. The statements that the Syrian authorities formed the organization the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant and finance it in order to create sources of a terrorist threat are unscrupulous, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told a briefing on Tuesday on the results of the Russia-EU summit.

“We believe the statement that the Syrian government established the organization the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, uses it and finances it in order artificially to create a terrorist threat to affect the minds of the Europeans and remain in the saddle are unscrupulous in the extreme, and those who control the Syrian opposition, especially those who control its propaganda machine, are vastly responsible,” Lavrov said.

“We talked with our American partners about the need to prevent steps that would encourage terrorists to be more active in Syria,” Lavrov said. “As to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, its aim is not only to seize power in Syria but also to create an Islamic caliphate all over the region. Its rivals are people of the same kind in Jabhat al-Nusra or in the recently formed Islamic Front, people with confirmed terrorist groups in their midst. The Islamic Front has a special department responsible for the introduction of the Sharia law,” Lavrov noted.

Thus, “resumption of the deliveries of lethal and non-lethal arms into this region means running the risk that wrong people will get hold of these arms, the way it already happened earlier many times,” Lavrov said.
