Police free building housing authority in Ukraine’s Sumy region

KIEV, January 27. /ITAR-TASS/. Police have thwarted blocking of the building housing regional authorities, detaining 12 people in the city of Cherkassy, central Ukraine, overnight to Monday, the press service of the regional prosecutor’s office reported.

“A group of unidentified people staged massive riots at around 00:20 local time (22:20 GMT) on Monday on Sobornaya Square in the city of Cherkassy and blocked the building housing regional authorities. Police have curbed illegal actions and detained 12 people involved in these criminal offences,” the press service said. A measure of restraint is about to be handed down on them.

Police also freed the building housing regional authorities in north-eastern Ukraine’s Sumy region from protesters. After opening a criminal case over illegal seizure of the hall at a session hall of the Sumy regional council police asked protesters to free the building.

“Most protesters fulfilled this demand. Those who tried to resist were detained. Helmets and sticks were confiscated from them,” the press service said.
