CHISINAU, January 10. /ITAR-TASS/. Moldova’s biggest state-run cable operator Moldtelecom has stopped rebroadcasting of the Russia 1 television channel, which enjoys high popularity in the republic. It was done “for political purposes,” Yevgeny Sergeyev, the director of the rebroadcasting company RTR-Moldova, told journalists on Friday and called on the Moldovan government to have its say in the situation.
“Moldtelecom’s managers have fulfilled the order of third parties or competitor, or it was a politically-motivated move,” he said. “Obviously, the shutdown of one of the most popular television channels in the midst of the New Year holidays was not in the interests of the state company and the audience.” Sergeyev said the television channel had referred a claim to the cabinet of minister and a sectoral commission of the parliament.
Moldtelecom however has provided no comment on the situation.
Russia’s embassy in Chisinau told Itar-Tass it had also filed a request with the Moldovan government asking to check the legitimacy of Moldtelecom’s actions.
