Ukrainian frigate joins EU antipiracy operation off Somalia

The task of the Ukrainian contingent is to react against piracy, protect civilian ships performing tasks within the framework of the World Food Program as well as prevent armed robberies

KIEV, January 03, 15:15 /ITAR-TASS/. The Ukrainian Navy Hetman Sahaidachnyi frigate has joined the EU antipiracy Operation Atalanta off Somalia, the Ukrainian Defence Ministry reported on Friday.

It said the mission was carried out in line with a decree by the Ukrainian president and a law passed by the Ukrainian parliament earlier.

“The law envisages the dispatch of a special contingent of up to 250 military for Ukraine’s participation in the EU operation between January 3 and March 5, 2014,” the ministry’s press service specified.
