Russia urges warring sides in Syria to continue local truces

MOSCOW, December 27. /ITAR-TASS/. The practice of local truces in Syria “can and must be continued,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich told Tass on Friday commenting on reports about a truce between government forces and opposition gunmen in the al-Maadamia area.

“This is especially important ahead of calling on January 22, 2014 the Geneva 2 international conference aimed to reverse the course of events in Syria from an armed confrontation to a peace dialogue and normalization,” Lukashevich said.

“It is necessary to encourage the Syrian parties to act this way there where it is possible, aiming to put an end to violence and reach agreements from considerations of humanity and also with an aim to create proper atmosphere for a stable process of political settlement in Syria,” Lukashevich said.
