MP: US fails to play stabilizing role in Mideast

In recent years Russia has stepped back influencing the situation in the Middle East and the United States has played the first role in the region, Alexey Pushkov says

MOSCOW, December 23. /ITAR-TASS/. The United States failed to play a stabilising role in the Middle East, State Duma Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Alexei Pushkov said on Monday.

“Russia is returning to the Middle East and we have a big space for the activity in the region,” Pushkov said.

In recent years Russia has stepped back influencing the situation in the Middle East and the United States has played the first role in the region. “We see that the situation in the region even aggravated,” the State Duma lawmaker said.

“Prospects for ensuring peace are far as never before. The Gaza Strip is permanent place of confrontation. The war continues in Afghanistan. Iraq faces the monstrous effects of the invasion. The so-called Arab Spring began, but it only destabilised the situation,” he said.

“The way elected by the United States turned out to be very counterproductive. I think that the U.S. presence in the region tired. The Arab world sees it and understands,” Pushkov said.

“The failure of the U.S. policy conditioned the regional countries’ interest in Russia, which has what to propose. We can find diplomatic ways to influence the situation. Russia’s initiative on Russia is our diplomatic victory and many people support us,” the lawmaker said.
