Former head of Arab League Asmat Abdel-Meguid dies in Cairo

CAIRO, December 22, 2:06 /ITAR-TASS/. Former Secretary General of the League of Arab States (LAS) Asmat Abdel-Meguid has died at the age of 90 in Cairo, Egypt’s capital, on Saturday, local media reported.

From 1991 through 2001 Abdel-Meguid has headed this organisation, which was established in 1945. He replaced Amr Moussa at this post.

Before this the Egyptian diplomat has worked as the country’s foreign minister for seven years. In 1985 Abdel-Meguid has worked as the country’s deputy prime minister for a year.

The prominent Egyptian diplomat has also worked as the permanent representative at the United Nations Organisation for 11 years, has participated in the negotiations with Britain over the withdrawal of the British troops from Egypt in 1954 and in the negotiations with France over the resumption of diplomatic relations with the country after the tripartite aggression in 1956.
