Rebels fire at American planes in South Sudan, three servicemen injured

LONDON, December 21, (ITAR-TASS). Two U.S. military aircraft were fired at in South Sudan Sky News reported.

As a result, three American servicemen were injured, one of them is in critical condition.

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit said there had been an abortive coup attempt by the supporters of former Vice President Riek Machar Teny. Observers say that contradictions between these politicians may develop into a full-blown civil war.

According to Sky News, the planes were heading to the rebel-controlled city of Bor, the capital of the Jonglei State.

BBC reported that the two U.S. planes had arrived in South Sudan to evacuate Americans and possibly citizens of other countries.

After landing, the planes were fired at and had to fly to Uganda’s capital of Kampala, from which the injured troops were transferred to Nairobi, Kenya, for medical treatment.
