Russia's FM says blatant pressure put on Ukrainian government

Lavrov: Kiev is demanded to make its choice in favor of Europe; in essence there are internal contradictions

MOSCOW, December 18. /ITAR-TASS/. Blatant pressure has been put on Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at the Federation Council, upper house of parliament, on Wednesday.

“We’re surprised at the attempts to put blatant pressure on the Ukrainian government despite the decisions, which were taken in Moscow yesterday,” the minister said.

“Kiev is demanded to make its choice in favor of Europe. In essence there are internal contradictions. A sovereign state is refused to exercise its right to settle the situation on the own account and act in compliance with its law and national interests,” Lavrov said.

“Our position is based on the respect of Ukraine’s sovereign choice,” he said, adding “We hope that Ukraine will succeed in resolving the existing issues on a constitutional and legal base in order to take its own decision.
