Iran set to take part in Geneva II, but without preconditions

Iranian ambassador to Russia: everybody knows that Iran played a constructive role in the Syrian conflict, which could not be resolved without participation of the Islamic Republic

MOSCOW, December 17. /ITAR-TASS/. Iran is set to take part in an international peace conference on Syria dubbed as Geneva II, but without preconditions, new Iranian ambassador to Russia Mehdi Sanaei said on Tuesday.

“Iran has repeatedly announced its readiness to play a more active role in the Syrian conflict settlement,” he said. “We are set to take part in Geneva II, but Iran is not ready to accept any terms and conditions of its participation in the meeting.”

Sanaei said everybody knew that Iran played a constructive role in the Syrian conflict, which could not be resolved without participation of the Islamic Republic.

“The Syrian people should decide” the future of President Bashar Al-Assad, he said. “We are against external interference into other states’ domestic affairs,” Sanaei said, confirming Iran’s position “there is no military solution to the Syrian conflict.
