SPD’s Frank-Walter Steinmeier returns as German foreign minister

The 57-year-old politician held the post between 2005 and 2009

BERLIN, December 15, (ITAR-TASS_. The leader of the Social Democratic Party’s parliamentary faction, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, returns as German Foreign Minister, political sources report, saying his candidacy was approved by the party leadership.

The 57-year-old politician held the post between 2005 and 2009, when a ‘grand coalition’ led by Angela Merkel was in power. The ‘grand coalition’ included the Social Democratic Party (SPD),the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union.

Steinmeier will officially take up the post on December 17, on the same day when Angela Merkel is expected to be re-elected for her third term as Federal Chancellor.
