About 5,000 protesters on Independence Square, situation calm

KIEV, December 12, (ITAR-TASS). About 5,000 protesters are currently on Independence Square in downtown Kiev, the Ukrainian Interior Ministry reported.

Over 200 protesters are at the Mariinsky park, near the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament, the ministry said.

“No gross violations have been reported. The situation in Kiev... remains calm,” the ministry said.

The Interior Ministry urged protesters not to yield to provocations. “No one encroaches upon a citizen’s right to peaceful protests,” the ministry said.

It quoted Minister Vitaly Zakharchenko as saying “No one can ignore the rights and legal interests of other citizens. The capital should work normally.
