Attempts to upset Geneva-2 to be most blatant violation of will of world community

Russia's Foreign Minister: I proceed from the assumption that the initiative of Geneva-2 gained the support of the international community

TEHRAN, December 11. /ITAR-TASS/. The attempts to upset a peace conference Geneva-2 are a blatant violation of the will of the world community, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in the Iranian capital on Wednesday.

In reply to the question about Saudi Arabia’s intention to boycott an international conference on Syria, if Bashar al-Assad runs in the elections, the minister said that he is “unaware of this statement by representatives of Saudi Arabia.”

“I proceed from the assumption that the initiative of Geneva-2 gained the support of the international community,” Lavrov noted. “It was supported by U.N. Security Council Resolution 2118, which was approved in a consensus, and under the U.N. Charter is compulsory for the fulfillment by all U.N. states,” the minister said.

“We learn from time to time that some party or another is dissatisfied with the forthcoming event. I hope that it will certainly take place,” the minister added. “Someone finds it more productive and quicker to settle the problem by the use of force, through a foreign intervention, but I did not receive any confirmation to these words,” the foreign minister noted. “Those countries concerned should do their best so that the Russian-U.S. initiative would be a success,” Lavrov noted. “The timeline of the conference was already announced and the attempts to foil this event will be a blatant violation of the will of the international community,” Lavrov added.
