The trading center is located in a Riga residential area. According to the State Fire and Rescue Service, the bodies of six victims remain unidentified.
About 40 people who also included rescue workers received injuries of various degrees. Thirty three people were taken to five city hospitals. The rest said they did not need more than first medical aid.
The incident took place late on Thursday. First, a wall collapsed followed by the roof. The second roof fell down when rescuers were on the spot, removing the rubble. The area of subsidence is approximately 500 square meters.
Rescuers continue pulling bodies from under the rubble. The exact number of casualties is still unknown. The rescue operation will be under way the whole night.
