MOSCOW, November 18, /ITAR-TASS/. Humanitarian corridors in Syria are being used for militants, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

“Primarily, it is necessary to drive the humanitarian situation from the deadlock and afford protection to humanitarian corridors. The creation of such corridors and non-fly zones without the Syrian government’s accord are designed to carry humanitarian aid from outside,” Lavrov said in an interview with Rossiiskaya Gazeta on Monday.

“When humanitarian corridors are created they were used to supply weapons, money and other forms of support to the regime’s opponents,” the minister said.

Lavrov has called for using these corridors to provide aid to the population.

“Primarily, it is necessary to drive the humanitarian situation from the deadlock and afford protection to humanitarian corridors. The creation of such corridors and non-fly zones without the Syrian government’s accord are designed to carry humanitarian aid from outside,” he stressed.

The norms of international law demand humanitarian aid “should be provided exclusively through the channels of a government. I have a very simple question to initiators for creating such corridors: you supply arms and ammunition and sigh the aid is not coming to the areas seized by militants. Let’s send humanitarian aid through the corridors”, he said.

“This violates international law because the government will not be involved in the process. If you violate international rules on the ban of arms supplies to non-state players, don’t reproach the international community for standstill,” Lavrov said.
