Kyrgyzstan to continue cooperation with US, but Manas base will be closed

The U.S. airbase was opened in Bishkek in December 2001

BISHKEK, November 15 (ITAR-TASS) - Official Bishkek is not considering the issue of extending the term of deployment of a U.S. Air Force base at Manas airport (Bishkek), Sapar Isakov, deputy chief of the presidential administration of Kyrgyzstan, told reporters on Friday. According to him, no options for extending the airbase’s deployment term in Bishkek are discussed with the U.S. side.

“However, this does not mean that our further cooperation with the United States ends here. We have a number of joint projects, including in the field of security, and they will be implemented,” he said.

The U.S. airbase was opened in Bishkek in December 2001. According to the decision of the Kyrgyz parliament, the U.S. military are required to leave Kyrgyzstan before July 14, 2014.
