Russian, Japanese defence ministries should develop closer contacts - Shoigu

Shoigu noted that he lauded Onodera’s proposal to discuss military cooperation and world issues

TOKYO, November 1 (Itar-Tass) - It is necessary to establish closer contacts between the Russian and Japanese Defence Ministries, Russia’s Minister Sergei Shoigu said.

At the meeting with his Japanese counterpart Itsunori Onodera on Friday, Shoigu said, “In recent years considerable changes have been made in the world politics and in relations between both countries.”

“Cooperation should be more open. To this end, it is necessary to develop closer relationship between the ministries,” the Russian minister said.

Shoigu noted that he lauded Onodera’s proposal to discuss military cooperation and world issues. “I’d like to focus on acute problems like as terrorism and its proliferation all round the world, drug trafficking and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction,” he said.

Shoigu thanked his Japanese counterpart for a possibility to meet the new Russian defence minister. The Russian minister also congratulated Onodera on the 59th anniversary of the foundation of the Japanese Defence Ministry.
