Death toll in shipwreck near Lampedusa Island reaches 211

The fate of about 100,440 refugees from the sunken vessel remains unknown

ROME, October 7. (ITAR-TASS). Italian divers found on Monday in a search operation another 17 bodies of Africans who died in a shipwreck off the coast of Lampedusa. Thus, the number of victims of the tragedy that occurred on October 3 has reached 211 people. This was reported by the Coast Guard Filippo Marini.

The fate of about 100,440 refugees from the sunken vessel remains unknown. 155 people were rescued; some of them were transferred from Lampedusa to other temporary accommodation centers.

On Friday, it was a day of national mourning for the tragedy in Italy. The Government of the Republic intends to raise the issue of illegal immigration to EU debate. October 9th head of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso will visit the island.

Since the beginning of 2013, according to the country’s Interior Affairs Ministry, about 30 thousand illegal migrants arrived to Italy.
