Commander of Cuban Air Defense Forces and Air Force dies in road accident

He was a fighter at a battalion of people’s guards during the Caribbean crisis of 1962

HAVANA, August 28 (Itar-Tass) - Commander of Cuba’s Air Defense Forces and the Air Force, Division General Pedro Mendiondo, has succumbed to injuries received in a road accident, Cuba’s national television reported Monday night.

Apart from the General himself, the road accident that occurred Sunday claimed the lives of another three members of his family.

Mendiondo was born August 13, 1945. He took a course of training as an artillery soldier in 1961 and was a fighter at a battalion of people’s guards during the Caribbean crisis of 1962.

He moved to the ranks of the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces in 1963 as he entered a cadet school.

After that Mendiondo participated in the internationalist mission of Cuban troops in Angola where he rose to the ranks of a colonel.

The government entrusted command over the Air Defense Forces and the Air Force to him in 2000.
