According to local mass media, the attack was stages at a moment of adhan, or azan, the Islamic call to prayer to be followed by the first iftar, or the evening meal when Muslims break their fast during the Islamic month of Ramadan. The girl was shot dead by a stray bullet.
Following the attack, the military detained three attackers.
Overnight to Wednesday, two civilians were killed and eight more Egyptians, including three law enforcers, were wounded in a similar attack near Nahl on the highway linking the Suez Canal and Nuweiba and Taba located at the border with Israel.
Following these attacks, additional security checkpoints have been installed along roads, especially those to resort areas. Local Bedouins are patrolling remote and hard-to-reach localities and report any foreigner movements.
