Police detain 20 anti-government demonstrators in Istanbul’s Taksim Square

In Ankara police had to use water cannon to disperse a crowd of several dozen protesters

ANKARA, June 30 (Itar-Tass) - Police in Istanbul detained 20 participants in an anti-government demonstration in Taksim square, where a crowd of 7,000 to 10,000 gathered to express anger over the June 28 clashes with police in Kurdish Diyarbakir province, in which one person died and a dozen others were injured. The demonstrators had been protesting the construction of a concrete wall around a local police station. The protesters set fire to builders’ tents.

In Taksim Square police cordoned off the monument to reformer Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. After repeated calls upon the demonstrators to leave riot police armed with shields began to force the demonstrators back. Neither tear gas no water cannon was used.

In Ankara police had to use water cannon to disperse a crowd of several dozen protesters, who tried to stage an unauthorized march towards Kizilay Square. Some demonstrators were detained.

A town near the border with Iraq saw clashes between demonstrators and police. About 1,000 people, including members of the pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy party, gathered in front of the town hall to read out a message in connection with the Diyarbakir events. After that a small group of extremists started hurling stones and launching flares. Police responded with tear gas and water cannon.

Protest actions in Izmir, Adana and Antalya were peaceful.
