LONDON, June 14 (Itar-Tass) - Both Russia and Great Britain are seriously concerned about the situation in Syria and are ready to facilitate its speediest settlement, Federation Council Chairperson Valentina Matviyenko said after a series of meetings in London on Thursday, June 13.
She said Russia and Britain have “some disagreements over how to settle the Syrian crisis, but they both seek to put an end to the bloodshed as soon as possible and resolve the conflict since it is beginning to endanger the whole region.”
Matviyenko voiced Russia’s concern about possible arms supplies to the Syrian opposition and cited media reports as saying that “the insurgents walked over dead bodies in Shiite villages and called Shiites infidels.”
She believes that this indicates that the conflict is developing into an ethnic and religious one and may have serious consequences such as disintegration of Syria into separate parts which may consequently be run by terrorists, radicals and extremists. “This is a dangerous tendency,” she stressed.
Britain takes Russia’s arguments calmly, with understanding, she noted. “But we need to continue the dialogue and contacts in order to bring our positions closer and reach coordinated approaches to political settlement in Syria,” Matviyenko said.
