Vesnina, Makarova: Grand Slam victory without dropping a set - quite a surprise

They defeated defending champions Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci of Italy 7-5, 6-2

PARIS, June 9 (Itar-Tass) - Fourth-seeded Elena Vesnina and Ekaterina Makarova of Russia, who won their first Grand Slam title together in the women’s doubles final of the French Open on Sunday, confessed that their victory at the tournament without dropping a set was quite a surprise.

They defeated defending champions Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci of Italy 7-5, 6-2.

“Frankly speaking it was quite a surprise for us that we did not drop a set during the whole tournament, because this is really a very hard competition,” Vesnina told a news conference after the finals. “We have already been playing together with Katya for a year. I think we have a good team. We brilliantly understand each other and now we are confident in our strength. In the finals we managed to play a really good tennis.”

Makarova said in turn this victory was especially valuable, as they beat the Grand Slam champions.

“We are especially happy as we beat them (Errani and Vinci) for the first time. We often played against them, they are the world’s best in the women’s doubles. They play very good, and it is especially difficult to play against them at clay courts. But we played our best tennis during the match and today this worked. I am very glad that we won the first finals in the Grand Slam tennis series, it is an enchanting feeling,” Makarova said.

“We really wanted to beat them finally, because it’s really difficult to play against the same team and be losing all the time," Vesnina said. “We were not thinking it was a final or a Grand Slam, we were just thinking that we have to beat them and for this we should play our tennis and believe in ourselves. Everything went as we wanted it to be.”

This is the second major title for Ekaterina Makarova, who won the mixed doubles with Bruno Soares at the U.S. Open last year. Elena Vesnina got its first Grand Slam title in her tennis career.

Vesnina said she felt something special to the French Open.

“This was my dream, I love Paris, and Roland Garros is my favourite Grand Slam tournament,” she said. “When I was a small girl, Yevgeny Kafelnikov won it. And then he invited our family to his place and showed me his French Open cup saying “Lena, this will be your first Grand Slam cup.” I always remembered this.”
