Russia calls for thorough investigation into detention of Syrian militants in Turkey

"Russia believes that the use of any chemical weapons is absolutely inadmissible,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said

MOSCOW, May 31 (Itar-Tass) - The Russian Foreign Ministry has called for thorough investigation into the detention of Syrian militants carrying poisonous sarin gas in Turkey. "We are extremely concerned with media reports. Russia believes that the use of any chemical weapons is absolutely inadmissible,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said on Thursday.

The diplomat recalled that the Syrian government had stressed many times that it totally ruled out the use of chemical weapons in the internal conflict. At the request of Western partners, Moscow “received all necessary assurances from the Syrian side that this kind of weapons would be strictly guarded and preserved. We know that they are doing it,” Lukashevich said.

"Moscow has been repeatedly calling attention to the extreme danger of provocations involving chemical weapons and materials staged by terrorist and radical opposition, primarily with an aim to open the way to external armed interference in Syria,” Lukashevich emphasized. He added that reports coming from Turkey confirm that these fears may have grounds.

"Under these circumstances we believe it is important to reveal and publish all the details of the incident so that to thwart any future attempts by terrorists to use chemical weapons against civilians and provoke external intervention into Syria,” the Russian diplomat said.
