KIEV, March 29 (Itar-Tass) – One person died and three were injured when fire broke out at the Uglegorsk thermal power plant in the town of Debaltsevo in the Donetsk region. Twelve thousand people remain without electricity.

The equipment that mills coal into dust went ablaze, a representative of the Ukrainian State Service for Emergency Situations, said on Friday.

The flames spread to an area of about 1,500 square meters on the building’s roof. There were about 400 people in the thermal power plant’s territory when the fire erupted. Rescuers evacuated ten people from the smoke-covered workshop. Twenty-seven vehicles were mobilized to extinguish the fire.

The fire has fully disrupted the heat and water supply system in Debaltsevo. According to weather forecasts, the night temperature in the town is expected to drop to minus 7 degrees Centigrade. The local authorities have decided to hand out heaters to low-income families and old people.
