UN SC authorises armed intervention in Mali

The document allows a deployment of the African-led International Support Mission to Mali (AFISMA) of 3,300 troops for an initial period of one year

UNITED NATIONS, December 21 (Itar-Tass) —— The U.N. Security Council has authorised a deployment of a peacekeeping contingent in Mali to free northern regions of the country from Islamic extremists.

A resolution adopted on December 20 stresses that the peacekeeping contingent will operate honouring the sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity of Mali.

The document allows a deployment of the African-led International Support Mission to Mali (AFISMA) of 3,300 troops for an initial period of one year.

The contingent will be tasked with assisting the Malian army in regaining control over northern provinces, protecting the population and ensuring the security of humanitarian cargoes.
