Germany's real military aid to Kiev is far smaller than Berlin claims — Bild

According to the calculations, only 10.2 billion euros has been spent on this support so far

BERLIN, April 8. /TASS/. The German government overstates the amount of military support for Kiev, both already provided and still planned, the Bild newspaper has said with reference to calculations by Ingo Gedehans (of the Christian Democratic Union), a member of the Bundestag Budget Committee.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz has repeatedly stated that Germany had allocated a total of 28 billion euros for military support for Kiev or provided commitments for future expenditures. In reality, according to the legislator's calculations, only 10.2 billion euros has been spent on this support so far.

Germany has a chance to demand that the EU return some of the funds allocated as military support to Ukraine. So far, 31 million euros has been returned to it, and Berlin has requested another 3.4 billion euros. In fact, part of the money is allocated to Kiev not by Germany, but by the EU, Bild writes. Another part of the 6 billion-euro package promised by Scholz to Ukraine will go to other countries and or be spent to rearm the Bundeswehr. Gedehans believes that in this way another 2.6 billion euros can be cut out of the 28 billion euros.

In the end, the legislator concludes that with the above and other spending taken into account, the real military support from Germany can only amount to 21.7 billion euros, while some of the obligations are extended until 2028 and what will happen by then is anyone’s guess.

"The chancellor gives an impression as if Germany has already supported Ukraine militarily in an amount of 28 billion euros. In reality, we still have not yet allocated even half of the amount," the newspaper quoted Gedehans as saying.
