Azerbaijan to seek help from Russian peacekeepers in Nagorno-Karabakh mine clearing

BAKU, April 4. /TASS/. Azerbaijan plans to enlist the help of Russian peacekeepers in Nagorno-Karabakh demining operations, said Vugar Suleymanov, chairman of the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action.

He made the statement at a news conference dedicated to International Day of Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, which is marked on April 4.

"There plans to engage Russian peacekeepers in the demining process in the territories of Azerbaijan that were liberated from occupation. Currently, bomb engineers and their equipment are undergoing accreditation. It started on April 1 and is planned to be completed on April 6. After successful completion of the accreditation process, the bomb squad of the Russian peacekeepers will start demining activities in Khojaly District," Suleymanov said.

According to the official, since the end of military operations in Nagorno-Karabakh in November 2020, Azerbaijani bomb engineers have cleared mines from an area of almost 130,000 hectares. He said 350 people suffered from mine explosions over that time, and 65 of them died.
