BANGKOK, March 20. /TASS/. The conflict in Ukraine is challenging the international economic and political structure of the 21st century, Thai political scientist Jiraporn Ruampongpattana told TASS.
"Two key factors influence policy-making: first, sanctions [against] Russia and their impact on the global energy supply chain; secondly, the situation in Ukraine, where a proxy war of superpowers is being waged. Thus, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine challenges both the domestic and international economic and political structure of the 21st century. Thailand may not face all the consequences of this conflict directly, but regardless of the political party in power, Thailand will continue to monitor the situation, while not abandoning cooperation with Russia in various fields. Thailand, as before, adheres to a balanced policy in the current situation," she said.
"Thai-Russian ties are characterized by relative neutrality; they are based on cooperation in various fields such as economy, trade, tourism, sports and culture. Putin's fifth presidential term may not have come as a surprise to Thailand, but the potential escalation of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine may make Thailand cautious in its relations with Russia," the political scientist believes.
