IAEA chief says further visit to Russia may be possible later this year

Rafael Grossi met with Russian President Vladimir Putin during his visit to Russia last week

TOKYO, March 14. /TASS/. Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), does not rule out paying another visit to Russia later in 2024.

"Regarding a possible further visit [to Russia], it will depend on the evolution of the agenda <…>. I don’t exclude it. There are no immediate plans for that and it may be possible," Grossi said at a news briefing in Tokyo, taking a TASS reporter’s question.

Grossi met with Russian President Vladimir Putin during his visit to Russia last week. In an open part of the conversation, they discussed cooperation between Russia and the IAEA in general as well as projects in various countries. The Russian leader, among other things, said that his country was ready to share its practices in the nuclear energy sphere with interested partners.

However, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov refused to comment on the closed-door part of the conversation. Later, the IAEA said that Grossi had reiterated his call for maximum restraint around the nuclear facility at the meeting with Putin.

The IAEA chief is currently visiting Japan. In particular, he inspected the discharge of recycled water into the ocean at the Fukushima-1 NPP.
